The highest authority for these institutions is the Central Governing Council (CGC), which is led by the Defence Secretary of the Ministry of Defence.

All-boys boarding schools, Rashtriya Military Schools RMS institutions are connected to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India. Chail Military School was the first of the five RMS to be founded in 1922. Rashtriya Military Schools RMS Admission Eligibility

The following is the eligibility requirement for admission into the Rashtriya Military Schools RMS institutions:

• A candidate must be at least 10 years old and at least 12 years old on March 31 of the year of admission in order to be admitted to Class VI.
• Prior to the date of admission, candidates must have completed Class V for Cass VI at a government-approved or accredited institution. A student studying in Class V is eligible to appear in the appropriate Entrance Test.
• For admission to Class IX a candidate shall not be less than 13 years and more than 15 years of age as on 31 March of the year of admission.
• Prior to the admission date, candidates need have graduated from a government-approved or recognized school with a Class VIII for Cass IX. Students in Class VIII are eligible to take the corresponding entrance exam.

Admissions Procedure at Rashtriya Military Schools RMS

Admission Test: Using an optical mark reader (OMR), the CET written test for Classes VI and IX will be entirely automated.

Interview: Those who pass the written test will be contacted for an interview after being placed on a shortlist. The scores from the written exam and the interview are used to determine final merit.

Rashtriya Military Schools RMS reservations

Seats in the following categories are reserved by the schools.

• The wards of active and retired JCOs/OR members of the Army, Navy, and Air Force are entitled to 70% of the seats.
• Officers’ and civilians’ wards are allotted 30% of the seats.
• For OBC Non-creamy layer, SC, and ST candidates, respectively, 27%, 15%, and 7.5% of the seats in each category (except from the Officer Category) are set aside.
• There are 50 places in all (no more than 15 in each school) designated for wards of individuals killed in action.
