The highest authority for these institutions is the Central Governing Council (CGC), which is led by the Defence Secretary of the Ministry of Defence.

Admission Test: Using an optical mark reader (OMR), the CET written test for Classes VI and IX will be entirely automated.
Interview: Those who pass the written test will be contacted for an interview after being placed on a shortlist. The scores from the written exam and the interview are used to determine final merit.
Result: IHQ of the MoD (Army) will announce the school allocation and the merit list of the selected candidates.
Final Selection: Candidates will be admitted to various Rashtriya Military Schools based on the availability of vacancies, their medical fitness, and the reservation guidelines established for different categories. They will be chosen in order of merit based on the total scores they received in the admission test and the interview. Only merit and open positions will be used to assign qualified applicants to schools.
Medical Examination: Lastly, the Director General of Medical Services will designate which candidates would be required to take a medical examination at the Command/Zonal and other Military Hospitals. Only those who are deemed medically fit will be given the opportunity to be admitted.

Syllabus: Class V written exams are often required for entrance to Class VI, whereas Class VIII written tests are required for admission to Class IX. For Class VI, the question paper medium is either English or Hindi; for Class IX, it is solely English.
